Verdi's monumental Aida unfolds along the Nile as Ethiopian princess Aida is forced to choose between her homeland and her love for the Egyptian captain Radamès. With its Triumphal March, its hushed Nile duets and its sealed-tomb finale, it remains the grandest test any opera company can take on — and the Staatsoper Berlin production keeps the focus where Verdi wanted it: on three people trapped between war, duty and desire.

Calixto Bieito's reading at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden strips away the tourist-postcard Egypt and lets the political brutality underneath surface. The Staatskapelle Berlin — one of the oldest continuously playing orchestras in the world — brings a depth of colour few houses can match, especially in the brass-led Act II procession and the chamber-intimate Act IV.
What to expect in Berlin
Expect a house that treats Verdi as drama first and spectacle second. Berlin audiences come for the singing, and Aida delivers four of the hardest principal roles in the repertoire in one evening. Book early for Stalls and First Circle — the sightlines from the upper tiers are excellent but the Act II triumph lands hardest from the middle of the house.
