Strauss and Hofmannsthal's Ariadne auf Naxos is an opera-within-an-opera: a Prologue backstage at a wealthy patron's house, then the patron ordering his hired tragic opera and his hired commedia-dell'arte troupe to be performed simultaneously. The result pits the abandoned Ariadne's longing for death against Zerbinetta's philosophy of moving on — an unmatched study of high and low art in a single evening.
