La Bohème Berlin — Giacomo Puccini, 1896
Four young artists, one attic garret, one unforgettable Christmas Eve — Puccini's La Bohème compresses youth, friendship and loss into two and a half hours of perfectly judged melody. The opera follows poet Rodolfo and seamstress Mimì from their first meeting by candlelight to a final act that redefined how opera could break an audience's heart.
Why this production at the Staatsoper Berlin
Puccini's score is short, precise and lethally effective, and the Staatskapelle Berlin has played it often enough to know exactly when to hold back and when to flood the stage with sound. The Staatsoper Berlin mounts La Bohème as an ensemble piece rather than a star vehicle, which is arguably how Puccini intended it: four friends have to feel like four friends before the tragedy of Act IV can work.
