The Silent Woman Berlin — Richard Strauss, 1935
Die schweigsame Frau — The Silent Woman — is Strauss's late comic opera, adapted by Stefan Zweig from Ben Jonson. A retired admiral wants silence. His nephew tricks him into marrying a 'silent' girl who turns out, after the wedding, to be anything but.
Why this production at the Staatsoper Berlin
The opera had a brief, troubled premiere in 1935 (Zweig was Jewish, the Nazis had banned him, Strauss refused to drop him as librettist) and has always belonged more to Germanophone houses. The Staatsoper Berlin's Strauss tradition makes it the obvious home for the piece.
