Bellini's Norma is the summit of bel canto — a Druid priestess in occupied Gaul, caught between her sacred vows, her secret love for a Roman, and the younger priestess who also loves him. 'Casta diva,' her first-act prayer to the moon, is the most famous bel canto aria ever written, and the hardest to sing well.
