Salome Berlin — Richard Strauss, 1905
Strauss's Salome is 100 minutes of hypnotic transgression — a one-act shocker adapted from Oscar Wilde's play, built around a princess, a severed head and a dance that still unsettles audiences 120 years later. Premiered in Dresden in 1905, it remade what opera could be and sound like.
Why this production at the Staatsoper Berlin
Salome is a Staatskapelle Berlin piece at heart — the orchestra recorded it under Karajan and has played it more than almost anyone. The Staatsoper Unter den Linden's relatively compact hall lets the 100-piece orchestral assault hit with the force Strauss intended, and the title role is a true star turn for the right dramatic soprano.
