The Tales of Hoffmann — Jacques Offenbach, 1881
Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann is the composer's only serious opera — three fantastical loves of the poet E.T.A. Hoffmann, each representing a different facet of love: the mechanical doll Olympia, the consumptive singer Antonia, and the Venetian courtesan Giulietta.
Why this production at the Staatsoper Berlin
Offenbach died before he could finish the score, and any performance has to decide which version to stage. The Staatsoper Berlin opts for a performing edition that preserves the Venice act — home of the famous Barcarolle duet 'Belle nuit, ô nuit d'amour.'
