Berlin's Olympic Cathedral
The Olympiastadion sits at the heart of the Reichssportfeld in Berlin's Westend, designed by Werner March and built between 1934 and 1936 for the controversial 1936 Summer Olympics. Originally capable of holding around 100,000 spectators, its monumental travertine-clad oval became the stage for Jesse Owens' four gold medals. It survived the Second World War largely intact and was used by the British military administration in West Berlin after 1945.
From 1963 it has been the home ground of Hertha BSC, and between 2000 and 2004 it was comprehensively renovated under Gerkan, Marg and Partners, gaining a partial roof and modern seating. It now seats 74,475 and is Germany's largest football stadium for international matches; it staged the 2006 FIFA World Cup Final, the 2015 Champions League Final and the UEFA Euro 2024 Final.
