Classic Open Air Berlin Tickets at Gendarmenmarkt

Classic Open Air transforms Gendarmenmarkt into an outdoor concert hall in the centre of Berlin. The audience is seated beneath the open sky, surrounded by the Konzerthaus, the French Cathedral and the German Cathedral.

The combination of live orchestral music and neoclassical architecture makes this concert very different from a conventional performance inside a concert hall. Gendarmenmarkt’s central location also makes the event particularly attractive to international visitors looking for a memorable cultural experience during a summer stay in Berlin.

The festival has been part of Berlin’s cultural calendar for more than 30 years. Its programmes combine classical music with opera, crossover, jazz and popular music, attracting both experienced concertgoers and visitors attending an orchestral performance for the first time. The 2026 edition welcomed more than 30,000 guests across its programme of concerts.

Beethoven, Debussy and Ravel Under the Stars

The Classic Open Air Berlin opening concert presents a complete orchestral programme rather than a collection of short popular excerpts.

The announced programme is:

Claude Debussy
Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune

Ludwig van Beethoven
Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 58

Claude Debussy
La Mer

Maurice Ravel
Ma mère l’Oye – Suite for Orchestra

The evening begins with Debussy’s atmospheric Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune, followed by Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto with Lukas Sternath at the piano.

After the interval, the orchestra returns with Debussy’s La Mer, a vivid musical portrait of the sea, before concluding with Ravel’s colourful Ma mère l’Oye. The programme is subject to possible changes.

Konzerthausorchester Berlin Live

The Konzerthausorchester has a particularly close connection to this location. Its regular home is the Konzerthaus Berlin, which stands directly behind the Classic Open Air stage.

For the 2027 opening night, the orchestra will be conducted by Antonello Manacorda. Born in Turin and trained in Amsterdam, Manacorda was a founding member and long-standing concertmaster of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra before developing an international conducting career in opera houses and concert halls.

Pianist Lukas Sternath joins the orchestra for Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4, providing the central solo performance of the evening.

Seeing the Konzerthausorchester perform immediately outside its own concert hall gives this event a distinctive Berlin identity and makes it an excellent choice for visitors searching for classical concerts at Gendarmenmarkt.

What to Expect at Classic Open Air Berlin

The concert takes place outdoors in a reserved seating configuration. Doors open at 17:30, two hours before the scheduled 19:30 start.

Arriving early is recommended to allow sufficient time for admission, security checks and finding your seating area. It also gives visitors an opportunity to explore Gendarmenmarkt and enjoy the atmosphere around the Konzerthaus before the performance begins.

As this is an outdoor summer concert, visitors should check the expected weather conditions before travelling and bring suitable clothing where necessary. Current entrance requirements and permitted items should also be reviewed before attending.
