An Amphitheatre Among Pines

The Waldbühne is an open-air amphitheatre on the western edge of the Olympiapark in Berlin's Westend, designed by Werner March as part of the Reichssportfeld complex and built between 1934 and 1936. March modelled the layout on the ancient Greek theatre at Epidauros, with rows rising steeply through pine woods toward a natural bowl; it opened on 2 August 1936, the day after the start of the Berlin Summer Olympics, and hosted Olympic boxing.

After 1945 it was repurposed for boxing, open-air cinema and political rallies, and from the 1960s it became one of Europe's most prestigious open-air concert venues. The Berlin Philharmonic has performed its traditional season-closing summer concert here since 1984, broadcast live on television since 1992. Today the bowl seats 22,290 spectators and forms part of the Olympiapark cultural district.
